Sheep shot: Cassidy slams Donegal squad for backing McGuinness

Kevin Cassidy hit back at his former team-mates as the row over his departure from the Donegal senior panel flared up again.

KEVIN CASSIDY TOOK to Twitter last night to hit back at his former Donegal team-mates for not standing by him in his recent row with Jim McGuinness.

The Gweedore footballer was controversially axed last month after McGuinness deemed his contribution to a “behind the scenes” book on the county’s Ulster Championship-winning season to have breached a confidentiality agreement.

Cassidy hasn’t found much support from his former colleagues since the controversy broke and yesterday, captain Michael Murphy told reporters that the whole panel agreed that the wing-back’s actions had been “out of line”.

But Cassidy stood his ground last night, firing a pointed message which seemingly accused his critics of toeing the party line rather than making up their own mind on the row.

“In life the opinions you express should be you’re [sic] own and you shouldn’t be influenced by others,” he tweeted.

At the time of the row, Cassidy -- who won an All-Star as Donegal claimed their first provincial title since 1992 -- defended his comments in Declan Bogue's This is Our Year, saying "I don’t believe I revealed any secrets within the squad."

But Murphy told reporters yesterday that McGuinness's decision had the full backing of the squad.

“Kevin stepped out of line and that was agreed on by everyone so that was unfortunate but we’re looking forward to a new season and we’re looking forward to rowing in behind everybody again and getting on with it.”
