Sligo Rovers will compete in this year's Scottish Challenge Cup

The Bit O’Red are set to replace Bray Wanderers, who were banned from participating in the competition.

SLIGO ROVERS HAVE accepted an invite to take part in the IRN-BRU Scottish Challenge Cup this season.

With Bray Wanderers banned from involvement in the competition along with Limerick due to their late payment of player wages, the Bit O’Red were offered the chance to step in as the SSE Airtricity League’s representatives along with Bohemians.

The other clubs taking part are Crusaders and Coleraine from Northern Ireland’s Premiership, The New Saints and Connah’s Quay Nomads from the Welsh Premier League, Sutton United and Boreham Wood from the National League, the 30 Scottish Championship, League 1 and League 2 clubs, U21 ‘Colt’ teams from each of the 12 Scottish Premiership clubs, as well as representatives from the Scottish Highland and Lowland leagues.

Sligo and Bray became the first League of Ireland sides to compete in the tournament last year, but both were knocked out at the first hurdle.

“We would like to thank the SPFL for extending this invitation to take part in the IRN-BRU Cup again,” said Martin Heraghty, Sligo Rovers chairman.

We look forward to testing ourselves once more against opposition from different countries, and hope we can make it a prolonged stay this time.”

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster added: “We are delighted to welcome back Sligo Rovers to this year’s IRN-BRU Cup. This is a competition that continues to evolve and innovate, and we believe that makes it exciting for players and supporters alike.”

The first round ties will be played on 14 and 15 August, but Sligo and Bohemians come in at the the second round, which are scheduled for 8 and 9 September.
