Sorensen calls time on injury-hit career

Twenty-six-year-old announces his immediate retirement from professional tennis.

ONE OF IRELAND’S top tennis stars, German-born Louk Sorensen, has announced his retirement from the professional game at the age of just 26.

Since putting in a career-best performance to reach the second round of the Australian Open in January 2010, Sorensen, who turned pro in 2003, has been frustrated by a series of hamstring and knee problems which have kept him out of action.

As a result, he has only been fit to compete in three tournaments since August of last year, plummeting from 213th in the world rankings charts to 482nd over the past fifteen months.

Speaking to RTÉ.ie, Ireland’s Davis Cup captain Gary Cahill paid tribute to Sorensen, saying that he would be sorely missed by the national squad.

“Louk has had a really impressive Davis Cup career to date and he is a proven match winner in international competition,” Cahill said.

We acknowledge his enormous talent and while his retirement is a setback, we understand very well the huge disappointments he has suffered with injuries throughout his career.
