The Morning Score: Friday

Coleman withdraws from Irish squad, McDowell has a stinker in America, and Keith Gillespie signs for Longford Town.

1. #EURO 2012 Giovanni Trapattoni’s preparations for tomorrow evening’s qualifier against Macedonia were dealt a blow when an ankle injury forced Seamus Coleman to withdraw from the squad yesterday.

We’ll be keeping on top of all the latest updates as the day progresses, including live tweets from this afternoon’s pre-match press conference.

2. #FORE! Graeme McDowell had a round to forget on the opening day of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. The Ulsterman shot an eight-0ver par 80, leaving him a whopping 14 shots off the early pace set by Spencer Levin.

The Irish contingent on the European Tour had a slightly better day. Paul McGinley (-2), Gareth Maybin (-2), Darren Clarke (-1) and Damien McGrane (Par) are all still in contention after the opening day of the Andalucia Open.

3. #LOCAL HEROES How about this for a transfer shock? Yesterday evening, Airtricty League First Division outfit Longford Town announced that they had secured the services of Keith Gillespie – he of Manchester United, Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers fame.

We’re still trying to get our heads around the whole thing. Alan Smith may well have something to say about the matter when his weekly League of Ireland preview lands later on this morning.

4. HOWZAT! The Cricket World Cup continues this morning when South Africa and New Zealand meet in the tournament’s third quarter-final.

Yesterday, India booked their place in the semi-finals with a five-wicket win over Australia. They will now face Pakistan next Wednesday in Punjab.

5. #HORSES FOR COURSES Fresh from his Cheltenham success, Hurricane Fly looks set to make it a double with trainer Willie Mullins expecting him to be fit and ready for the Rabobank Champion Hurdle in Punchestown.

6. #MAGNIFICENT SEVEN After taking a Cheltenham-related hiatus last week, our weekly Magnificent Seven column makes its return this week as we take a look at some our favourite footballing moments from the Lansdowne Road era.

Unsurprisingly, this one made the cut. We’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on the others though.
