The Morning Score: Monday

Ireland struggle past Scotland, Szczesny gifts Birmingham a trophy, and Crossmaglen and St. Brigid’s clear their schedules for St. Patrick’s Day.

1. #SIX NATIONS A win is a win, right? Wrong.

Ireland were lucky to escape with a three-point victory after a disappointing performance in Murrayfield yesterday. Though Declan Kidney’s men eventually panicked their way to a 21-18 win over Scotland, you can expect the hand-wringing to continue for the next couple of days.

If you missed the game, you can catch up with all of the details in our minute-by-minute coverage here. Alternatively, you can flick through some of the best photos from yesterday’s action here or see what the good Twitter folk had to say about it here.

2. #LOCAL HEROES It was a big weekend for the men of Crossmaglen Rangers and St. Brigid’s Roscommon, both of whom recorded victories in their All-Ireland senior football club semi-finals over the weekend. Read about their wins here.

The Dubs were also big winners over the weekend, seeing off old rivals Kerry by a single point when the sides met in Croke Park on Saturday night. We’ll have a round-up of all the league action later on this morning.

3. #GAFFE Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was left red-faced after his 89th-minute mistake gifted Birmingham City a 2-1 win in the Carling Cup Final.

The Pole’s mistake came just over a week after he mocked Ashley Cole on Twitter for missing the decisive penalty in Chelsea’s FA Cup exit to Everton.

4. #HOWZAT? A brilliant innings of 158 from Andrew Strauss helped England to a thrilling draw against India in Bangalore yesterday. Graeme Swann’s single off the final ball brought England to 338 runs, the exact total that they had earlier dismissed the Indians for.

5. #OLE! Barcelona extended their lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga to seven points as goals from Messi, Villa and Pedro gave the Catalans a 3-0 win away to Mallorca on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho’s men came away from their trip to La Coruna with a single point after they were held to a scoreless draw.

Garreth Nunn will review the weekend’s action in The Spanish Corner later on this morning. While you’re waiting, catch up with last week’s column on Getafe, Madrid’s unknown team.

6. #OUCH “Barney’s movie had heart but Football In The Groin had a football in the groin.”

A lil’ something to make Monday morning a happier place. CBS commentator David Feherty experienced the golfing equivalent of Hans Moleman’s cinematic masterpiece when he visited a Dallas high-school last week.

It’s a pretty decent shot to be fair to the kid.
