The Morning Score: Thursday

Michael Murphy learns his fate, Conor Niland tries to write a little bit of history, and G-Mac tries to hang on to his crown. All that, and more, in today’s Morning Score.

1. #GAA Donegal senior football captain Michael Murphy will learn his fate when the appeal against his sending-off last weekend is held later on today. Check out the incident here and decide for yourself.

Just in case you can’t get enough of that Championship goodness, we’ll also have the first of a nice little GAA podcast series later on today, courtesy of our good friends at the Irish Examiner.

2. #WIMBLEDON Limerick man Conor Niland has a chance to make a little bit of history today when he takes on Nikola Mektic for a place in the first round draw at Wimbledon. A win would see Niland become the first Irish player to make it to the main tournament since Sean Sorensen lost to Rod Laver in 1977.

Dublin-based Vitalia Diatchenko is also one game away from the main draw at SW19. The 20-year-old beat Maria Elena Camerin of Italy 6-3 6-3  yesterday to progress to the third and final qualifying round.

3.  #US OPEN The 2011 US Open gets underway at the Congressional Country Club in Maryland this afternoon, with defending champion Graeme McDowell out on course early at 12:55 Irish time.

Yesterday, we brought you a hole-by-hole guide to the course which charges a cool $150,000 for membership. To be fair, it is pretty nice.

4. #ASCOT The two-and-a-half mile Ascot Gold Cup is the feature race on Day Three of the Berkshire flat festival. After the disappointing defeat of So You Think in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes yesterday, Aidan O’Brien will be hopeful that Fame And Glory can stay the distance to bring home the £150,000 prize.

Our choices for the first two days weren’t that far off, so it might be worth keeping an eye out for today’s selections in Mark Your Card, our daily racing preview.

5. #SILLY SEASON Werder Bremen’s highly-rated midfielder Marko Marin is the latest foreign import to be linked with a move to the Premier League, with his agent confirming yesterday that offers from both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur had been rejected by both player and club.

We’ll have all of the latest transfer rumours and news in our daily round-up at lunchtime.

6. #YOUTUBE Thursday is Youtube day. If you’ve seen any clips that you think are worthy of inclusion in our weekly chart, e-mail them to sport@thescore.ie before it’s too late.

I’m lobbying strongly for this one to make the cut, natch.
