The Morning Score: Tuesday

Here’s everything you need to know this morning – apart from where you left those snow socks you bought last year.

1. #PREMIER LEAGUE Chelsea kept in touch at the summit of the Premier League last night with an important 2-1 win over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

An out-of-favour Frank Lampard came off the bench to grab the winner eight minutes from time, slamming a penalty past Joe Hart after Joleon Lescott had been penalised for handball.

2. #HEINEKEN CUP Peter O’Mahony will have to watch from the sidelines as Munster take on the Scarlets in Thomond Park on Sunday. The back-row was ruled out for two weeks after sustaining a hairline fracture in his jaw during last week’s win in Parc y Scarlets.

There is some good news for the province however as Keith Earls looks set to return to training this week and could be included in the squad for Sunday’s game.

3. #REPUBLIC OF IRELAND The international friendly between the Republic of Ireland and England proposed for next May could be in jeopardy.

Last night, FAI chief executive John Delaney conceded that the game was unlikely to take place before next summer’s European Championships, but promised that the FA were anxious to come to Dublin “sooner rather than later after that.”

4. #WILKINSON Veteran fly-half Jonny Wilkinson announced his retirement from international rugby last night, calling time on a brilliant career which saw him score 1,179 points in 91 Test appearances.

Wilkinson will be best remembered for landing the crucial drop goal which won England the Rugby World Cup in 2003.

5. #HORSE RACING Willie Mullins and Hurricane Fly were the big winners at the 2011 Irish Racing Awards yesterday.

Hurricane Fly, who won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, was crowned Horse of the Year while Mullins, his trainer, picked up the National Hunt Trainer of the Year prize for their third successive year.

6. #IRB Bernard Lapasset was re-elected as IRB Chairman for the next four years, beating England’s Bill Beaumont by 14-12 at the final vote in Las Vegas yesterday.
