Toole briefly woken from induced coma

Irish jockey sustained serious injuries during racing at Aintree on Saturday.

IRISH JOCKEY PETER TOOLE was briefly brought out of an induced coma by doctors last night as the 22-year-old continues to recover in a Liverpool hospital.

The County Meath man suffered bleeding on his brain after a serious fall from 100/1 shot Classic Fly during the Maghull Novices’ Chase at Aintree on Saturday.

Doctors took the decision to induce a coma on Saturday pending the results of a CT scan which took place yesterday.

The Press Association reports that the jockey was briefly woken yesterday evening before being put back under for the night, while a spokesman for the Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery described Toole’s condition as “still critical but stable.”

Trainer Charlie Mann, whose yard Toole is attached to, spoke positively of the young jockey’s condition last night though he emphasised the delicate nature of the recovery.

“His CT scan came back negative, which is good news,” said Mann.  ”His body is OK and he woke up last night from the induced coma and he was moving his legs. They then put him back under in the night and he should be coming out of that again this morning.”

I’ve spoken to his father this morning and it is a case of so far, so good. Everything is as good as it can be at this stage. They’ll do some tests on him when he has woken up.
