Waterford complete double swoop for Latvian international and former Blues winger Galvin

Alan Reynolds’ side have boosted their squad as they try and secure a top three finish in their first year back in the Premier Division.

WATERFORD HAVE COMPLETED deals for Latvian international Renārs Rode and former midfielder Corey Galvin, as the Blues boost their squad to try and make sure of a European finish with 10 games left in the Premier Division.

Rode has represented his country on four occasions, scoring once in a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Lithuania, and played against Ireland in an international friendly four years ago at the Aviva Stadium.

Former Ipswich Town youth academy prospect Galvin returns to Waterford following stays at both Cabinteely and Bray Wanderers, with the Seagulls announcing earlier this month that they were willing to listen to offers for all of their current players.

“I’m delighted to sign for the club,” said Galvin, who spent five months at the RSC in 2015. “I’ve been around for the last few weeks and am thrilled to get it sorted. When the opportunity came about to sign for Waterford, I couldn’t say no.

“I was at the club a few years ago and the changes are massive. It’s a professional football club, even from simple things like the quality of the training ground at the RSC.

“For any team to come up from the First Division it’s tough and to be in 3rd at the moment says all you need to know about the club.”

Manager Alan Reynolds said both players were welcome additions heading into the final stretch of the season, as the club seek to secure a top three finish alongside a run in the FAI Cup.

“Getting the two lads signed up was a priority this week and I’m delighted to get both sorted,” the manager said on Friday.

“Renārs is a defender with plenty of experience and he gives us good options. He’s done well since he’s come in and I’m glad to have him here.

“Cory is a tricky winger who’s played against us this season and done well. He’s pacy and likes to get at defenders.

“He’s played at the RSC a few years ago so we’re happy we’ve been able to pick him up too.”

The signings are a major boost to Waterford’s squad for the remainder of the season following the additions of both Dessie Hutchinson and Noe Baba last month, with striker Courtney Duffus also extending his loan deal until the end of 2018.
