KIERAN MARTIN’S GOAL was the decisive score as Westmeath stormed clear in the closing stages against Wexford in today’s Leinster quarter-final clash in Mullingar.

It was a tightly contested encounter for long stages with Westmeath clinging to a 0-9 to 0-8 lead at the interval.

Martin pounced for the crucial goal with ten minutes left and that helped Westmeath push on before claiming a comfortable win.

Westmeath built on their opening round win over Louth to take the spoils here.

John Heslin pitched in with 0-5 while Shane Dempsey struck 0-4 and Martin weighed in with 1-2.

Captain Ciaran Lyng was Wexford’s top scorer with 0-8 while Adrian Flynn and Kevin O’Grady chipped in with 0-2 apiece.

Westmeath had moved in to an early 0-5 to 0-2 lead but by the interval their lead had been cut as they only held a 0-9 to 0-8 advantage.

Wexford gained a grip on the match to go in front by 0-14 to 0-12 ahead with 11 minutes remaining but then Westmeath pounced for that crucial goal and they outscored Wexford by 1-9 to 0-1 in the closing stages.
