MASTERS CHAMPION DANNY Willett has broken into the top 10 of the Official Golf World Rankings for the first time in his career following his stunning win at Augusta.
The Englishman came into Sunday’s final round trailing defending champion Jordan Spieth by three shots, and it appeared as though the world number two would meander to a second green jacket after pulling five clear with nine to play.
However, a spectacular collapse from the usually unflappable American following a quadruple bogey at the par-three 12th left the door ajar and Willett carded an unblemished 67 to finish three clear of Spieth and playing partner Lee Westwood.
As well as the honour of winning a green jacket, Willett also moves up to the world number nine in the rankings marking his first entry in the top 10.
The top eight remains unchanged with Jason Day leading the way from Spieth and Rory McIlroy.
Willett’s compatriot and fellow south Yorkshireman Matthew Fitzpatrick also carded 67 on Sunday to finish in a tie of seventh, a result that saw him climb to 39th from 43rd.
Hideki Matsuyama and Brandt Snedeker were also in the top 10 at Augusta, the former moves up one spot to 13th in the rankings while he latter climbs two places to 15th.
Shane Lowry, meanwhile, has moved up one place to 31st and Graeme McDowell is down to 66th
