Football fans avoid jail by buying a Bayern Munich jersey for their assault victim

Two 1860 Munich fans avoided jail by buying their victim a new jersey.

WHO SAYS THE Germans are no craic?

Bayern Munich and city rivals 1860 may not be regular opponents, but the rivalry is still bitter.

Recently, two fans of the blue side of the city found themselves in court, charged with assaulting a Bayern fan, ripping his club hat jersey and scarf off him.

The pair refused to name the third person involved in the attack, and because of this, they were facing up to 15 months in jail each.

But after speaking to the victim, the quick-thinking judge offered the pair choice: either compensate the man to the tune of €1,000 and buy him a new Bayern Munich hat, scarf and jersey, or head to the big house.

Needless to say, the thugs weren’t long deciding what solution they favoured, and took a Bayern Munich themed shopping trip.

German newspaper Bild report that the judge Karin Jung consulted with the victim to ensure that the punishment should fit the crime.

“They showed no remorse, cast aside a confession chance and would not name the other perpetrators,” she said.
“I was thinking, ‘what would really hurt a football fan?’. And these measures were what I came up with.”

The lawyer representing the pair, Gunter Reisinger, said that they had apologised and compensated the man both financially and with some new club merchandise.

“My clients have already apologised to the Bayern fan and paid him €500 each for his pain and suffering”

“They even bought him the full Bayern jersey, a scarf and a new hat, all of which cost up to €100.

“There are not two hardcore football fans who would prefer to go to jail than buy kit from the Bayern shop. For my clients it was that or face the maximum penalty.”

Common sense by the judge, or should she have sent the two men to jail?
