CONOR McGREGOR HAS vowed to “keep going until all the fucking belts are wrapped up” but according to his most recent adversary, he won’t have any by the end of 2016.
Jose Aldo, who relinquished the UFC featherweight belt when he was knocked out by McGregor after just 13 seconds at UFC 194 in December, is still taking questions about the first man to defeat him in over 10 years.
McGregor will aim to add the lightweight title to his mantlepiece when he faces 155lbs champion Rafael dos Anjos on 5 March, and speculation is mounting over a potential clash with welterweight champion Robbie Lawler later this year.
When asked by reporters in Rio de Janeiro about McGregor’s plans to defeat dos Anjos and then challenge for the welterweight title, Aldo said:
That’s tough and I’ll say this: I don’t think he’ll have any belt by the end of the year. Everyone will forget him. He has this goal, but you can be sure that he won’t have any [belt] by the end of the year.”
Aldo believes that dos Anjos will be victorious at UFC 196 in Las Vegas in just over a fortnight’s time, and that he’ll regain the featherweight belt himself later in 2016.
“A fight is a fight and you have to respect the other side, but I see Rafael with the [lightweight] belt and the [featherweight] belt back to me. That’s a fact,” said Aldo.
“I expect a win from dos Anjos. I’m a patriotic Brazilian and I will always root for a Brazilian, no matter what. I will root for him. I wish him all the luck, I hope he wins.”
