ANNEMIEK VAN VLEUTEN has sent a message of thanks for the support she has received in the aftermath of her horror crash in the women’s road race at Rio 2016.
The Dutchwoman was leading in Sunday’s race before losing control on the final descent and crashing off her bike at high speed.
Van Vleuten was shown lying motionless after the incident, but on Monday she insisted she “will be fine” after it was confirmed she had sustained a concussion and three minor fractures to her lower spine.
Van Vleuten posted a picture on Twitter on Monday showing a dressing above her left eye.
Accompanying the photo was a post that read: “Thanks for all the messages.
“Hard to deal with my disappointment but also proud about our performances #teamNL.”
The course for the road race was criticised by Chris Boardman following Van Vleuten’s crash, with the Briton stating he was “angry” about the “dangerous” route.
