Schweinsteiger: "I've still got a year on my contract, so there's no rush and the summer's only just beginning."
Speculation

Bayern's sporting director offers Man United hope in their pursuit of Schweinsteiger

The 30-year-old recently indicated he wants to remain at the Allianz Arena.

BAYERN MUNICH SPORTING director Matthias Sammer has given Manchester United fresh hope in their pursuit of Bastian Schweinsteiger by admitting that “nothing is excluded” when it comes to the midfielder’s future.

Schweinsteiger enters the final year of his current contract this summer and is yet to agree an extension at the Allianz Arena, fuelling speculation of a possible reunion with former Bayern boss Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

Last month, Schweinsteiger insisted he wants to stay and win a fourth Bundesliga title at Bayern but Sammer says no final decision has yet been made on the 30-year-old’s long-term future.

“Basically, nothing is excluded,” Sammer told reporters when asked about Schweinsteiger at a press conference to announce the signing of Douglas Costa.

“It’s a crazy world. He has clearly expressed that he is an important part of the team, but let’s see. We’re still waiting.

“Basti is a very important player to Bayern Munich but there are a few things to consider. We have noticed the speculation going around in public but we’ll just have to wait. You can’t rule anything out in the transfer window.

“Basti himself has spoken clearly. He’s a very important part of the team. That’s all I can tell you at the moment.”

Bayern boss Pep Guardiola stated on Thursday that the midfielder’s future remains in his own hands, although he is keen for the experienced World Cup-winner to stay.

When asked about his future and the United links by German broadcaster ARD last week, Schweinsteiger replied: “I’ve still got a year on my contract, so there’s no rush and the summer’s only just beginning.”
