David Oliver Joyce and Brendan Irvine now face box-offs to book Olympic qualification

The pair lost their respective semi-finals.

IT HAS NOT been a great day for Irish boxing.

Earlier, Katie Taylor was stunned by Yana Alekseevna of Azerbaijan.  The Bray boxer must now compete at the World Championships in Astana to qualify for this summer’s Olympic Games.

Two of Taylor’s teammates have also been beaten at the semi-final stage this afternoon.

Brendan Irvine could not get past Narek Abgaryan of Armenia and now faces a box-off at the European Olympics Qualifiers if he’s to stamp his ticket to Rio.

The 19-year-old will take on Bulgarian Daniel Asenov in tomorrow’s box-off.

David Oliver Joyce will have to navigate a similar route to Olympic qualification.

Joyce lost on unanimous decision to Welsh fighter Joseph Cordina in the 60kg semi-final.

The St Michael’s Athy man will face Volkan Gockek tomorrow for a spot in Brazil.
