O'Donovans and Denise Walsh claim silver medals on memorable Sunday morning

A gold and two silvers for Ireland in Racice this morning.

IT HAS BEEN a memorable day for Irish rowing as Paul and Gary O’Donovan followed the earlier success of Skibbereen team-mates Mark O’Donovan, Shane O’Driscoll and Denise Walsh by claiming European Championship silver.

The Olympic silver medallists rounded off the most remarkable Sunday morning as they finished second behind France in the A Final at the European Rowing Championships in Czech Republic.

Earlier, Mark O’Donovan and O’Driscoll scorched to a superb victory in the men’s lightweight pairs final while Denise Walsh claimed her first major medal with silver in the lightweight women’s single sculls.

The O’Donovans were fifth at the halfway mark but, as we’ve come to expect, finished powerfully down the final 500 metres to edge ahead of the Italian and Polish pairs to claim silver.

France took gold and while the O’Donovans were unable to defend their European crown, it capped a historic morning for Skibbereen and Irish rowing.
