History makers: Dundalk players celebrate at full-time. Ciaran Culligan/INPHO
full coffers

How many millions could Dundalk earn from further Champions League progress?

Money, money and more money.

DUNDALK WILL RECEIVE a windfall of €5.4 million after they reached the Champions League playoff round earlier this month and in the process assured themselves of a place in the Europa League group stages.

The League of Ireland champions’ magical European adventure continued as they saw off BATE Borisov against all odds at Tallaght on a famous night for Irish football.

Victory meant the Oriel Park coffers will be boosted by at least €5.4 million — 49 times what they earned for winning the domestic title — and that figure will rise depending on how they progress.

If the Lilywhites go one step further and win their playoff tie against Legia Warsaw, the first leg of which takes place in Dublin tonight, they would receive €2 million purely for winning the match and an additional €12 million for reaching the Champions League group stage — something an Irish team has never achieved before.

In addition, each group stage win and draw would enable them to earn €1.5 million and €500,000 respectively.

That’s the dream scenario — and Stephen Kenny is very much focused on it.

But defeat wouldn’t spell the end of this odyssey, they will still have six Europa League group games to look forward to, which carry €360,000 and €120,000 for a win or draw.
