CORK CITY’S HOPES of going one step further in 2015 have been boosted today with the signing of Liam Miller.
The 33-year-old midfielder, who hails from Ballincollig in Cork, has agreed an undisclosed contract with the side who finished second to Dundalk in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division last season.
Miller will join the Leesiders after three-and-a-half years in Australia’s top flight, where he was an A-League Grand Final winner with Brisbane Roar last May.
“I am delighted to be returning home,” Miller told Cork City FC’s official website. “I will be proud to wear the Cork City jersey and do what I can for the team in front of all my family and friends.”
Capped 21 times by the Republic of Ireland at senior level, Miller began his professional career with Celtic before being signed by Alex Ferguson for Manchester United in 2004, for whom he made nine appearances.
Prior to his move to Australia, Miller also had spells with Leeds United, Sunderland, QPR and Scottish club Hibernian.
Cork City boss John Caulfield said: “It is a real marquee signing for us to get a player of Liam’s quality. Having a Cork lad like Liam coming home is a major signing and a big boost for us at the start of pre-season.
“He has played in Europe with Celtic and Manchester United, and of course he has played internationally with Ireland as well, so he has huge experience, but, most importantly for me, he is still in peak condition, still at the top of his game and full of energy.”
Cork City, who begin their League of Ireland campaign away to Sligo Rovers on 7 March, say Miller will be officially unveiled when he joins the squad for pre-season training later this month.
