Records tumble as 9 aces get sucked in at The Masters Par 3 contest

Jimmy Walker broke the tournament record, but Gary Player stole the show.

THE MASTERS PAR three contest was completely overawed by the players on the fun warm-up event before the serious Major action gets under way tomorrow at Augusta.

Jimmy Walker is the man who takes the dubious honour of winning the contest. The American’s record low round of eight under par and just 19 shots, history tells us, rules him out of the running for the Green Jacket presentation on Sunday.

Walker’s round was just one of a host of records set, but it was those claimed by Gary Player that deserve the most acclaim.

The South African’s hole-in-one on the seventh broke two previous bests: firstly, the 80-year-old is now the oldest man to make an ace, bettering Jack Nicklaus who managed the feat at 75. And the nimble old master also surpassed Ben Crenshaw’s record of three hole-in-ones in the Par 3 contest.

It was a day for aces, with a record nine getting sucked in by Augusta. Webb Simpson, Zach Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Symlie Kaufman, Justin Thomas, David Lingmerth and Andy Sullivan joining Player and Walker in cool strolls to the hole.
