Dundalk midfielder linked with move to Scotland commits his future to Lilywhites

Robbie Benson has signed a new one-year deal with the League of Ireland club.

DUNDALK HAVE RETAINED the services of Robbie Benson for another season amid speculation linking the 25-year-old midfielder with a move to Scottish club St Johnstone.

Benson, signed from UCD ahead of the 2016 season, has today signed a new one-year deal with the Lilywhites as Stephen Kenny rebuilds his squad ahead of the 2018 campaign.

The Athlone native has been a prominent member of Dundalk’s midfield over the last two seasons, and last term scored 12 goals in all competitions as the Lilywhites finished second in the SSE Airtricity League and made the FAI Cup final.

St Johnstone had watched Benson in the Cup final against Cork City at the Aviva Stadium and were keen to secure his signature, but the player’s wage demands acted as a stumbling block.

Instead, the former Ireland underage international commits his immediate future to Dundalk as they looked to regain the Premier Division title off Cork next season.

Benson joins goalkeeper Gabriel Sava and Sean Gannon in putting pen to paper on new deals at Oriel Park, while Dundalk have already confirmed the signings of Ronan Murray, Dean Jarvis, Stephen Folan and Patrick Hoban.

“I’m happy to get it done. I’m going in to my third season with the club now so I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“I’ve had a very successful two years and obviously losing the FAI Cup final last season left a bitter taste in our mouths but it’s given us a good drive to come back next year focused and hopefully re-gain everything that we gave away last year, progress in Europe and retain the EA Sports Cup as well.”
