RTÉ and TV3 expected to share coverage of Euro 2016

It is expected that TV3 will show more than 20 games at this summer’s tournament.

TV3 LOOK SET to show more than 20 Euro 2016 games after reportedly reaching a deal with RTÉ to split coverage of this summer’s football showpiece.

However, neither side has yet to officially comment on any negotiations.

In December, RTÉ admitted it was exploring the option of sub-licencing some of the tournament fixtures after posting an invitation to tender notice on its website.

While a spokesperson for the state broadcaster today said the station had “no comment” to make at this particular time, The42 understands that a report in yesterday’s Sunday Times — which stated TV3 would broadcast up to 22 games at this year’s tournament — is close to the mark.

That would represent 43% of the tournament’s 51 games with RTÉ expected to retain the rights to Ireland’s Group E games with Sweden, Belgium and Italy.

Such deals are not unusual with the BBC and ITV splitting UK coverage of the tournament.

A spokesperson for TV3 is yet to respond to a request for comment.
