Big crowd watch Colman's win all-Cork clash to book Harty Cup final spot

Fermoy school will face Our Lady’s Templemore in next month’s final.

St Colman’s College 1-8

Midleton CBS 0-7

BRIAN ROCHE’S GOAL proved to be crucial as St Colman’s College won this Cork derby to book their place in the Dr Harty Cup final.

It’s a first decider for the Fermoy school since they completed a hat-trick of titles back in 2003. They will face Our Lady’s Templemore on 18 February after they saw off Nenagh CBS in Saturday’s other semi-final.

The sides went in level at 0-3 apiece after a low-scoring first half in front of a crowd of 2,691 in Mallow.

After dumping out holders Ardscoil Rís following two thrilling quarter-finals, Midleton might well have fancied themselves to challenge for their first honours since 2006.

But their prospects suffered a killer blow as Colman’s fired 1-2 early in the second half, capped by full-forward Roche’s goal on 36 minutes.

That put four points between the sides, 1-5 to 0-4, but Liam Gosnell pointed twice to keep Midleton in the hunt before Liam O’Shea’s score cut the gap to just two points with a little over 10 minutes remaining.

Midleton might well look back on a number of missed opportunities as Colman’s finished strongest, Barry Murphy pointing to put a goal between the sides before substitute Richard Galvin added the insurance score in additional time.
