Alex Dunne drops to fourth in F2 Drivers' Championship after 10-second penalty

The 19-year-old from Offaly was penalised for ‘failing to engage the start set-up procedure at the start of the Formation Lap.’

LAST UPDATE | 27 Jul

ALEX DUNNE HAS lost out on a FIA Formula 2 win in Belgium after being hit with a 10-second penalty.

Dunne dropped to 10th after the penalty, with Red Bull junior driver Arvid Lindblad gaining victory. Yet Linblad was later disqualified for a technical infringement, moving Dunne up to ninth. Roman Stanek inherited victory at the Spa Francorchamps feature race.

Dunne, who claimed pole position on Friday, mastered the wet conditions and held off the challenges of Ritomo Miyata and Roman Stanek to clinch his third feature race victory of the season.

However, Dunne was penalised for “failing to engage the start set-up procedure at the start of the Formation Lap”.

A report on the FIA Formula 2 website explains that “a defined set-up procedure activation must be used during all formation starts and race starts and Car 17’s data shows that the driver did not engage the starting procedure.”

“The Stewards then spoke to a team representative and the driver and having considered the matter extensively elected to give Dunne a 10-second time penalty in accordance with the FIA F2 penalty guideline. This means he loses the Spa Francorchamps Feature Race victory.”

The 19-year-old from Offaly finished the 19 laps in a time of 46:13.821 with Arvid Lindblad second while Stanek was third.

The result initially put Dunne at the summit of the championship leaderboard, yet he is now fourth on 114 points. Leonardo Fornaroli now leads the Drivers’ Championship on 125 points ahead of second-placed Richard Verschoor on 122 points. Jak Crawford is third on 116 points, two ahead of Dunne.

Dunne set the fastest time in Friday morning’s free practice session in Belgium, and then repeated the feat in qualifying to take pole position for Sunday’s feature race.

With five rounds of competition remaining, Formula 2 heads to Budapest for the final round before the summer break. Round 10 at the Hungaroring takes place from 1-3 August .
