'Aura of confidence' about JBM, says Curran

The former Cork hurler has tipped his St Finbarr’s club-mate to succeed as manager.

FORMER CORK HURLER Ronan Curran has backed Jimmy Barry-Murphy to succeed in his new role as the county’s manager.

Curran says he has no regrets about deciding to call a day on his inter-county career and believes Barry-Murphy is the right man for the job.

Curran, who is Barry-Murphy’s club-mate at St Finbarr’s, said he decided to retire once Cork exited the Championship at the hands of Galway earlier this year. He told GAA.ie:

“What I wanted to do was make my decision before anybody else came in so that they would know what was happening, they would know what cards they had to play with basically.”

Curran also spoke in glowing terms about the level of confidence the Cork legend has the ability to instill in those around him:

“The biggest thing about Jimmy is that there is an aura of confidence about him, and you feed of that confidence and you become confident yourself.”

Curran also dismissed fears that the current squad were too old to compete at the highest level, saying:

“You don’t replace lads like the O’Connors and fellas like that very easily. They have been great servants for Cork and in my opinion they still have a lot of hurling left in them.”

Cork endured a disappointing year, getting beaten 3-22 to 0-23 by Tipperary in the Munster Championship, in addition to being knocked out in Phase 3 of the All-Ireland Qualifiers against Galway.
