Antrim have snapped up a former world boxing champion as coach

Brian Magee joins the Saffron footballers as S&C coach, while Paul Kinnerk will work with Limerick’s underage hurling academy.

FORMER WORLD SUPER-MIDDLEWEIGHT champion Brian Magee has joined the Antrim football setup.

Magee, who comes in to Frank Fitzsimons’ backroom as strength and conditioning coach, confirmed the news last night.

“Secret’s out,” he tweeted. “Can’t wait (to) get started with all the team.”

Magee briefly held the regular WBA belt in 2012 but retired from boxing after losing his first defence against Mikkel Kessler.

He served a six-month doping ban in 2013 after taking a supplement containing two banned substances, although UK Anti-Doping ruled that he did not intend to enhance his performance, and that the levels were consistent with a contaminated product.

The Lisburn native worked with Antrim earlier this year but now joins the setup on a more permanent basis, with Gearoid Adams coming in as coach.

Elsewhere, Paul Kinnerk is set to join Limerick’s underage hurling academy as a consultant, the Limerick Leader reports.

Kinnerk was part of Clare’s All-Ireland winning setup in 2013.
