Schalk Burger to miss South Africa's summer Tests against Ireland

The veteran flanker sustained an ankle injury while playing for the Stormers last weekend.

THE SPRINGBOKS WON’T have Schalk Burger available for next month’s three home Tests against Ireland.

Burger picked up an ankle injury during the Stormers’ Super Rugby defeat to the Bulls on Saturday, and although he played on with the aid of heavy strapping, it has now been confirmed that the 33-year-old flanker is likely to be sidelined for approximately five weeks.

“Schalk Burger is out and will miss the Bok Tests, and we hope that he will back for the Rebels game [2 July],” Stormers coach Robbie Fleck told a news conference today.

“It is a big blow for him as he still has strong Springbok ambitions. I’m sure that he would’ve had a few discussions with Allister [Coetzee, South Africa head coach] this week, but for us, we want him back for the Rebels game.”

Burger, who will move to England to join Saracens at the end of the current Super Rugby season, has been capped 86 times by the Springboks and was a World Cup winner in 2007.

Ireland will play the Boks in South Africa on 11, 18 and 25 June.
