Carter to miss All Blacks v Argentina with a calf strain

The injury prone fly-half withdrew from the squad on Thursday, and will be replaced by Aaron Cruden.

NEW ZEALAND FLY-HALF Dan Carter will miss Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test against Argentina in Wellington with a calf strain.

Carter withdrew from the squad on Thursday, with Aaron Cruden coming off the bench as his replacement at number 10.

Taranaki fly-half Beauden Barrett, 21, takes Cruden’s place in the reserves.

“Dan has been carrying a tight left calf this week, but had been hopeful of playing,” All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said.

“However, at training this morning it was apparent he would not be able to play. We have done the sensible thing and withdrawn him from the team.”

Carter’s withdrawal was one of six changes to the All Blacks side that defeated Australia 22-0 on August 25, with Conrad Smith back at outside centre after eye surgery.

Sonny Bill Williams has left the side to head to Japan, with Liam Messam and Samuel Whitelock missing out, with that trio replaced by Victor Vito, Brodie Retallick and Tony Woodcock.

Julian Savea replaces Hosea Gear, while Charlie Faumuina has been named on the bench.

All Blacks team: Tony Woodcock, Keven Mealamu, Owen Franks, Luke Romano, Brodie Retallick, Victor Vito, Richie McCaw (c), Kieran Read, Aaron Smith, Aaron Cruden, Julian Savea, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Cory Jane, Israel Dagg

Reserves: Andrew Hore, Charlie Faumuina, Samuel Whitelock, Liam Messam, Piri Weepu, Beauden Barrett, Ben Smith
