RESULT: Clare 3-24 Wexford 1-20

Hello and welcome along to this evening’s coverage of the Phase 3 hurling qualifier between Clare and Wexford. Who’s going to book their spot in the All-Ireland quarter-finals and who’s going to exit the 2013 championship? Throw in is at 5pm.

Here’s the Wexford team that’s named to start today. They’ve made four changes from the victory over Carlow last time out.

Keith Rossiter, Andrew Shore, David Redmond and Eoin Quigley all come into the team.

The players to make way are Michael O’Regan, Harry Kehoe, Shaun Murphy and Lee Chin.

WEXFORD: Mark Fanning (Glynn-Barntown); Eoin Moore (Oulart-the-Ballagh), Tomas Waters (St Martin’s), Bobby Kenny (Buffers Alley); Richie Kehoe (Faythe Harriers), Keith Rossiter (Oulart-The-Ballagh), Ciaran Kenny (Buffers Alley); Andrew Shore (Parnells), David Redmond (Oulart-The-Ballagh); Paul Morris (Ferns), Eoin Quigley (Sarsfields – Cork), Gareth Sinnott (Oulart-the-Ballagh, captain; Rory Jacob (Oulart-the-Ballagh), Jack Guiney (Rathnure), Podge Doran (Oylegate-Glenbrien)

Here’s the Clare team that is named to start, unchanged from last week’s victory over Laois.

CLARE: Patrick Kelly (Inagh-Kilnamona); Domhnall O’Donovan (Clonlara), David McInerney (Tulla), Cian Dillon (Crusheen); Brendan Bugler (Whitegate), Patrick Donnellan (O’Callaghan Mills), Patrick O’Connor (Tubber); Colm Galvin (Clonlara), Colin Ryan (Newmarket-on-Fergus); John Conlon (Clonlara), Tony Kelly (Ballyea), Peter Duggan (Clooney-Quin); Padraic Collins (Cratloe), Darach Honan (Clonlara), Conor McGrath (Cratloe).

This will be only the fourth championship meeting between the counties. They first met in the All-Ireland qualifiers in 2002 when Clare won on a 3-15 to 3-7 scoreline in Portlaoise.
The counties also met in the 2005 and 2006 All-Ireland quarter-finals in Croke Park which Clare won easily by 1-20 to 0-12 (2005) and by 1-27 to 1-15 (2006).

Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald was in action in that game in 2006 for the Banner. Here he is with current Wexford attacker Rory Jacob after that game.

INPHO/Tom Honan

Clare with change of strip today, all blue with saffron sleeve-stripe.

We’re ten minutes away from throw-in so let us know your predictions as to who is going to win this clash.

Can Wexford build on Wednesday’s brilliant Leinster U21 hurling final win over Kilkenny? Or will Clare continue their recovery from their Munster semi-final loss to Cork?

Clare are strong favourites to win this match and certainly Wexford are going to need to improve on their performance against Carlow last time out.

Wexford are wearing all purple jerseys for this evening’s game.

Goal for Clare from Shane O’Donnell!

Clare 1-2 Wexford 0-3: 14 mins – Clare have hit the net through Shane O’Donnell. Huge boost for them.

O’Donnell was a late inclusion to the Banner attack instead of Darach Honan. The Éire Óg clubman has showcased his goal threat since joining up with the senior side this year as he found the net against Cork in the league and against Waterford in the Munster quarter-final.

For a player that was in the minor ranks last year, O’Donnell has stepped up splendidly to senior level and looks a great asset in front of goal for Davy Fitzgerald’s side.

Clare 1-4 Wexford 0-3: 16 mins – Colin Ryan fires over a ’65 for Clare and then Tony Kelly taps over from play to send them four points clear.

That could have been a second goal for Clare before Tony Kelly pointed as Conor McGrath was close to finding the net before being crowded out by the Wexford rearguard.

Wexford are really growing into this game now.

Another great save by Wexford goalkeeper Mark Fanning to deny Clare’s Shane O’Donnell from finding the net.

Clare 1-16 Wexford 0-15: 63 mins – Vital point for Clare from Seadna Morey.

Clare 1-17 Wexford 0-15: 64 mins – And that’s another important score for Clare as Tony Kelly points. That gives them breathing space.

What an incredible finish to this game. Jack Guiney did brilliantly to field a high ball, turned and despite being under defensive pressure, he fired the ball past Clare’s Patrick Kelly.

Clare looked like they had this game sewn up during the second-half as they lead by six points on a few occasions but Wexford hung in there. How important were Mark Fanning’s saves from Conor McGrath and Shane O’Donnell.

This is going to be a real test now for both teams given the warm weather in Thurles.
