RULE NUMBER ONE of golf (as taught to us by Happy Gilmore): play the ball as it lies.
But what happens when it lies up against a fence with no room to swing the club?
That was the situation which faced businessman Matt Wheatcroft at the National British Par 3 Championships earlier this year.
What do you do with a shot like this?
Rather than take a drop and try to scramble an up-and-down for bogey, Wheatcroft played his shot off the fence, looping it up in the air and to within a couple of feet of the pin.

A fluke, sure, but it was quite a brilliant fluke.
“I’m used to playing crazy golf,” Wheatcroft joked afterwards.
“It’s not normally a shot on the golf course but I fancied it so I thought I’d just hit it and it went well.”
You can say that again.
