Dublin star broke nose but not eye socket in attack before Armagh challenge game

Davy Byrne will miss Sunday’s Leinster final.

DUBLIN MANAGER JIM Gavin has confirmed they will be without Davy Byrne for Sunday’s Leinster football final due to a broken nose suffered in a challenge match fracas last weekend.

The Ballymun Kickhams club man received the injury following a blow from a rival Armagh player before the match began at the DCU sports grounds in Glasnevin.

It had been reported that Byrne also suffered a fractured eye socket during the flashpoint though Gavin confirmed it was a nose fracture injury only.

The matter appears to be at an end as the All-Ireland winning manager stated that both players have since made contact and agreed to park the issue.

It’s understood that no official action will be taken against either player which occurred shortly before the officially sanctioned match which was referred by Longford referee Fergal Kelly began.

“Regrettably, an incident took place before a recent challenge game against Armagh,” said Gavin at a pre-Leinster final press briefing this evening.

“It’s disappointing because I think discipline would be a core philosophy of both management teams.

“Subsequent to that, both players have spoken and they regret what happened and both players are now concentrating on their inter-county careers.”

Byrne was an integral part of Ballymun’s run to the 2013 AIB All-Ireland club final and has emerged as a versatile utility player in Gavin’s county set up capable of playing in a variety of positions.

Byrne’s loss for Sunday’s Croke Park showdown is tempered by better news elsewhere.
