"We can shut the circus down" - Mayweather-McGregor fight terrible for boxing, insists De La Hoya

Oscar De La Hoya has no interest in a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor. But he would say that.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA has started a movement to keep the mega fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor from happening.

A boxing match between Mayweather and McGregor will tarnish the sport to the point where it may not be able to recover, De La Hoya lamented in a letter he posted on Facebook.

De La Hoya implored his fellow boxing fans to make it known they will not pay to watch the fight.

Mayweather’s bout with Manny Pacquiao in 2015, after years of hype, put boxing in a hole it is just “starting to dig out of”, De La Hoya wrote, and he envisions Mayweather-McGregor being even worse.

“If you thought Mayweather/Pacquiao was a black eye for our sport – a matchup between two of the best pound-for-pound fighters that simply didn’t deliver – just wait until the best boxer of a generation dismantles someone who has never boxed competitively at any level – amateur or professional,” he wrote.

Most boxing observers agree that McGregor is no match for Mayweather inside a boxing ring.

Sugar Ray Leonard said it will be one of the biggest mismatches in boxing history.

Furthermore, the Mayweather-McGregor bout is ill-timed, De La Hoya believes, as boxing is in the midst of a banner year after several good fights, including Anthony Joshua’s bout with Wladimir Klitschko.

De La Hoya anticipates backlash for his stance, because his company is promoting Canelo Alvarez against Gennady Golovkin in September.

“But my interest is in the health of boxing as a whole,” he wrote.

De La Hoya goes on to say Mayweather and McGregor are all about the money, and they are not even shy about letting everybody know that.

He concludes; “At this point, only we can shut the circus down by making it clear that we won’t pay to see a joke of a fight and telling our casual-fan friends that they shouldn’t either.”

Is De La Hoya right?
