Down shock Meath to end significant losing run while penalty the difference in Carlow

The Division 2 clash ended 1-13 to 0-14 at Páirc Esler.

DOWN PULLED OFF a shock victory over Meath at home in Division 2, as they ended their 14 game losing run in the league and championship.

Meath have just won one of their opening three league games under new manager Andy McEntee. It was Joe Murphy’s early goal that ultimately was the difference as the Northern side got off to the dream start.

Murphy punched the ball into the back of the net as the clock struck just two minutes, while three Darragh O’Hanlon points kept their lead.

Donal Lenihan scored three for Meath, but they were five points behind at half-time.

Lenihan’s free-taking kept the Royals within touching distance, but Down held their early lead, running out 1-13 t0 0-14 winners.

An early second half penalty was the difference between Carlow and Limerick in their Division 4 clash.

Limerick were first out of the blocks in Carlow, but the hosts were quick to reply. It was tit-for-tat throughout the first half, but the Shannonsiders were up by two at the interval.

Carlow opened the second set of thirty-five minutes on a high with John Murphy’s goal and that was the difference at the end of the day. Full forward Ciarán Moran was adjudged to have been fouled in the area and referee Brendan Cawley awarded the penalty.

From there they pushed on to dominate and claim both points.

Midfielder Brendan Murphy impressed and scored four points from play in a man-of-the-match performance, a huge contributing factor to his side’s win.

The game finished 1-10 t0 0-10 and Limerick are yet to secure a win, or a single league point.
