FAI and Dublin City Council joint bid for Euro 2020 games confirmed

The association is hoping to host three games and a last 16 match in the Aviva Stadium.

IT’S BEEN CONFIRMED today that the Football Association of Ireland and Dublin City Council have made a joint bid to be one of 13 host cities at Euro 2020.

The National Government and Dublin City Council will be bid partners, as the organisation awaits UEFA’s verdict on who has been chosen to host the prestigious event, which will be confirmed in September.

The association is hoping to host three games and a last 16 match in the Aviva Stadium as part of the tournament.

The Dublin bid cites the following as key attractions of the proposal.

  • One of Europe’s most modern and sustainable stadia, within walking distance of City centre.
  • Fully coordinated mobility proposition – Dublin City Council partnership with all transport providers
  • Two terminal EU capital city airport – 170 routes served by 55 airlines
  • Unique Dublin / Irish welcome and special Irish fans
  •  More than 20,000 hotel rooms in a major European city break destination
  • Strong bid team – Exceptional cooperation with Dublin Bid stakeholders led by DCC and FAI including Fáilte Ireland, the Irish Hotels Federation, the Stadium, the DAA, the RPA, the NTA, the NRA, Dublin Bus, Irish Rail and An Garda Síochána. The Dublin Bid has also received exceptional support from the family of football within Ireland.
  • Full National support from Taoiseach and the Government across all departments.

Speaking following the announcement, FAI CEO John Delaney said: “I would like to thank all of the Dublin Bid partners who have worked extremely hard to submit a strong bid for UEFA EURO 2020. The support of National Government and Dublin City Council has been crucial and I thank the Taoiseach and his Government, particularly Minister Varadkar and Minister Ring and the Department for Transport, Tourism and Sport as well as Dublin City Council for their assistance.”

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, added: “The Government is very supportive of the FAI’s bid to host part of the European Soccer Championships in 2020. If it’s successful, this bid will have a significant economic impact and hopefully encourage more young people to become involved in sport. I want to congratulate and thank the FAI, Dublin City Council and their partners for preparing a very comprehensive bid and wish them every success in their effort to secure Ireland as a host location.”
