Off The Record: Five stories you may have missed over the weekend

Concussed Casillas, Clark goes close and Mario wants your camera.

UNLESS YOU’VE BEEN glued to the internet all weekend, there’s a chance that some weird and wonderful sporting tidbits might have slipped through the cracks. Here’s a run-down of some of our favourites…

#IT’S ALWAYS HIM A new football season means another nine months of Mario Balotelli madness. The man just can’t help himself.

Consigned to the bench as the champions kicked off their title defence Balotelli had to find something to amuse himself. Lo and behold; photographer Sharon Latham was in his path as he moved from pitch to dressing room.

Manchester paparazzi, you have been warned.

#WAY DOWN SOUTH While we were all being enthralled by a thrilling opening day in England’s top flight, rugby history was being made in Cape Town.

Argentina, nemesis of Eddie O’Sullivan and black sheep of the game’s upper echelon, finally made a step into non-World Cup competitive action. Going head to head with the world’s traditional top three year in, year out is going to be a steep learning curve. Here’s how their very first Rugby Championship game unfolded.

#OOH, SO CLOSE Keeping the South African interest up for a bit; The Wyndham Championship, which is grabbing the imagination of very few, is progressing anonymously to a fifth day finish this evening.

Tim Clark currently trails Sergio Garcia by a single stroke. But, had he had an extra centimetre of luck on Saturday, he would be level with the Spaniard. Watch him go within a whisker of an ‘eagle 2′ on the 11th.

#BACK WITH A BANG You’ve probably already seen Lionel Messi hit the La Liga ground sprinting, but yesterday Real Madrid stuttered as they opened their title defence with a 1-1 draw at home to Valencia.

Valencia’s equalising goal shortly before half time, shook more than los Blancos collective confidence. It left the hosts’ area looking like a scene from Platoon with the skipper taking the full force of, chopper-in-chief, Pepe.

Casillas played on for the remainder of the half, but looked like he may have happily waved the next shot past him.

#REMEMBER THE NAME At the ripe old age of 16 years and 98 days, Fabrice Olinga has become the youngest ever player to score in La Liga. The Cameroon kid smashed Iker Munain’s magic moment by a full 191 days.

The goal itself may have bounced in off his knee, but his initial effort – a left foot curler which cracked off the post – showed the poise and skill he possesses.
