Fulham chairman tells fans to 'go to hell' over Michael Jackson statue criticism

Fans have been less than pleased to see the pop star immortalised outside Craven Cottage.

FULHAM CHAIRMAN MOHAMED Al-Fayed has told the clubs fans to ‘Beat It’ as he launched a defence of the statue of Michael Jackson that was unveiled outside the club’s ground on Sunday.

Al-Fayed, 78, unveiled the statue on Sunday as a tribute to his close friend the music legend Jackson who died in 2009 but the decision to put it outside the ground of the club he has poured more than £200 million into has been questioned by fans, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Responding to the criticism, Al-Fayed who sang and danced at the launch said:

Fulham fans will love it, if some stupid fans don’t appreciate such a gift they can go to hell.

If they don’t believe in the things I believe in they can go to Chelsea, they can go anywhere.

The statue, believed to have cost around £100,000, is 7ft 6in tall, made of a special plaster and resin and coated twice with all-weather varnish.

Jackson was a big Fulham fan according to Al-Fayed but he only saw one game involving the Cottagers, back in 1999.

The club’s players have backed the decision to erect the statute according to defender Brede Hangeland, who told the BBC: “We have the deepest respect for everything about the chairman. If he wants to do this then it is all good.”

However, plenty of Fulham fans are puzzled and angered by the decision to base the statue at the home of the West London side, reports The Guardian.

Nonetheless, it appeared to act as a good luck charm for Mark Hughes’ side who beat Blackpool 3-0 yesterday, although it was no ‘Thriller.’
