Galway stick a pin in Dundalk balloon with impressive win on the road
SSE Airtricity Men’s Premier Division
Dundalk 1
Galway 2
Niall Newberry reports from Oriel Park
A CENTURY INTO League of Ireland football, Dundalk’s anniversary celebrations were spoiled by Galway United as they recorded a 2-1 victory over the Lilywhites in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.
Goals in either half from Ed McCarthy and Kris Twardek put Galway in command, although they had to withstand late pressure after Trevor Clarke scored a free-kick five minutes from time.
The hosts created the first chance after seven minutes when a Clarke cross was not properly cleared, before Ronan Teahan scissored an effort wide.
Galway took the lead two minutes later through a route-one move, goalkeeper Hugo Cunha’s long kick-out helped on by Stephen Walsh towards McCarthy. He took a touch inside the box before producing a sublime finish that dipped over Enda Minogue.
The Lilywhites had a penalty appeal waved away by referee Mark Houlihan when Aodh Dervin went down under a challenge from McCarthy, but the official was unmoved despite the home side’s protests.
Teahan and Bobby Burns then had attempts for the hosts, although both were comfortably gathered by an untroubled Cunha.
Dundalk began to apply more pressure as the half wore on, with Clarke firing over from outside the box before Teahan broke down the left and saw his effort kept out by the Galway goalkeeper.
Tom Grivosti also fired wide, while Clarke struck the side-netting after being picked out by Burns in a promising move.
Galway offered a timely reminder of their threat when McCarthy got away from Mayowa Animasahun down the right and crossed for Walsh, whose close-range header was kept out by Minogue.
The hosts threatened again in first-half stoppage time, Dervin firing wide after Cunha had spilled a Daryl Horgan cross before Clarke turned an effort wide after Galway once more failed to clear their lines.
Five minutes into the second half, Horgan got between two Galway defenders as he cut inside from the left, but his final effort drifted wide.
The visitors doubled their lead on 55 minutes when McCarthy’s long throw was not dealt with by the Dundalk defence. Anthony O’Connor managed to keep the ball in play on the left before finding Twardek, who finished at close range.
With the atmosphere at Oriel Park now flat, wayward efforts from Clarke and Burns did little to lift the mood, while Vassenin also headed over from a Horgan corner.
A lifeline arrived for the Lilywhites five minutes from time when Declan McDaid was fouled by Matty Wolfe in a dangerous position. Clarke stepped up and curled a sublime free-kick beyond Cunha to halve the deficit and set up a nervy finish.
The home side came close to rescuing a point when Burns’ low cross was met by Clarke at the far post, but his goalbound effort was blocked by team-mate Vassenin.
There was one final chance for Clarke from a free-kick in stoppage time, but this time the effort went straight at Cunha as Galway held on for victory.
