A TEAM OF experts has presented forensic evidence which they say proves that Arturo Gatti was murdered, calling for the investigation into the former junior welterweight champion’s death to be reopened.
The Associated Press reports that the results of a 10-month investigation into Gatti’s death were published yesterday, a day after a civil trial opened in Montreal to hear competing claims on the Canadian’s $6m estate.
Gatti, 37, was found dead in July 2009 in a Brazilian hotel while on holiday with his wife Amanda Rodrigues Gatti and their infant son. Rodrigues Gatti was initially considered as a prime suspect in her husband’s death, but was released shortly after her initial arrest.
The Brazilian authorities’ initial criminal investigation, which found that the boxer had hung himself with a handbag strap, was rubbished yesterday as “pure, unadulterated fiction” by forensic pathologist Cyril Wecht.
A lawyer assisting the Gatti family said that he would be pushing the Brazilian authorities for an indictment of Rodrigues Gatti after the experts’ report had been translated and forwarded to them.
The civil trial in Montreal continues today.
