Gits and Mitchell

Toulon's Aussie boys were in sparkling form yesterday

Both Mitchell and Giteau scored beautiful tries in Toulon’s nine-try 60-19 hammering of La Rochelle.

TWO GAMES INTO the Top 14 season and Toulon already look in ominous form. Granted, yesterday’s 60-19 rout against La Rochelle wasn’t the sternest test, but some of the rugby played by last season’s champions was spectacular.

If Matt Giteau continues to attack the line and distribute the ball like he did yesterday, then Toulon won’t feel the absence of Jonny Wilkinson too much. And his mate Drew Mitchell showed great pace to race away for his try in the second half. They have so many options, and unlike Clermont, they have the testicular fortitude to grind out tough cup ties.

If you stuck around to about the 4.30 mark you would have seen another errant kick from the bulldozing Mathieu Bastareaud. You would have thought the baby rhino would have learnt his lesson after his squib of a drop goal in last season’s Heineken Cup final. Speaking of which, here’s a quick reminder of the damage Giteau and Mitchell can do at their peak (1.10 mark).
