'I won my bet with John Terry' - says Ron 'Chopper' Harris

The former Chelsea star is set to retain the club’s all-time appearance record.

JOHN TERRY’S TIME at Chelsea is running out as he prepares to leave at the end of the season and he will fall short of Ron “Chopper” Harris’ appearance record of 795 games for the club.

The Blues captain made his 716th appearance for Chelsea in the 4-3 win over Watford at Stamford Bridge on Monday and he broke down in tears after celebrating his fifth Premier League title with the club in front of the fans.

Harris paid his respects to Terry’s Chelsea legacy as the former England captain prepares to lift the trophy on what could be his last Premier League game on Sunday. Harris also revealed that he will win his bet with Terry when he departs the club.

John has been here a long, long time. I think he has been a tremendous servant for Chelsea Football Club but I did have a bet with him last year that he wouldn’t beat my [appearance] record,” Harris said.

“He has scored more goals than me! But I am still proud to have played more games than anyone in the history of Chelsea Football Club and I don’t think that will be broken.”

Terry may go down as Chelsea’s greatest ever player but he will only be ranked in third place on his club’s all-time appearance list – behind both Harris and Peter Bonetti.

Harris remains an employee of Chelsea and works on match days in hospitality. Gary Chivers works alongside him and he made 133 appearances of his own at Chelsea after coming through Senrab FC, a youth team in London that also produced Terry.

Chivers wants to see Terry return to Stamford Bridge after his playing days are finished.

John Terry has been a colossus at this football club but he wants to play for another couple of years,” Chivers said. “It will be so, so sad to see him go but what a man. Hopefully he will come back and coach or have some part in this football club because he deserves it.”
