If Sepp Blatter has his way, you'll never see another penalty shoot-out

“Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks,” Blatter said today.

FIFA PRESIDENT Sepp Blatter has claimed that football can be a ‘tragedy’ when a match is decided by a penalty shoot-out.

Despite dominating much of the Champions League final, Bayern Munich’s dream of continental glory was ended by Chelsea via the lottery of spot-kicks in this season’s final.

Blatter believes that football’s true nature is lost when a match is decided by penalties, and hinted that other options will be explored in the future.

“Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks,” Blatter said. “Football should not go to one on one, when it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence.

“Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer with his (FIFA Task Force) Football 2014 group can show us a solution, perhaps not today but in the future.”

In an effort to make the game fairer, FIFA have announced that England’s friendly against Belgium on June 2 will be used to test the goal-line technology to determine whether a ball has crossed the line.
