Irish trio guarantee bronze (at least) on brilliant day at EU Boxing Championships

Michaela Walsh, Kellie Harrington and Grainne Walsh will all have some extra luggage coming home from Cascia.

IRELAND’S BOXERS GUARANTEED three medals on a magic Monday at the European Union Women’s Championships in Cascia, Italy.

Michaela Walsh, Kellie Harrington and Grainne Walsh all won their quarter-final bouts yesterday, and guaranteed that they will return home with bronze medals at minimum.

Kristina O’Hara and Christina Desmond can join them on the podium when they return to the ring for their quarter-finals on Tuesday, while Dervla Duffy is in quarter-final action on Wednesday.

It was plain sailing for both Michaela Walsh and Harrington as they scored unanimous 5-0 wins against Julia Coroli of Moldova and Ditte Frostholm of Denmark respectively.

But Grainne Walsh needed a magnificent comeback to upset European bronze medallist Lauren Price in the welterweight division.

Wales’s Price took the opening round on three cards, leaving Walsh with an uphill battle, but the Offaly native dug deep to take a 3-2 split decision and a place in Friday’s semi.
