Irish Eye: Debut disappointment for Pompey's Henderson

It was a relatively quiet weekend for Ireland’s footballers cross-channel. Here’s a round-up of how they got on.

Premier League

Shane Long (Sunderland 2-2 West Brom) Long scored Premier League goal number three of the season on Saturday, putting West Brom 2-0 up inside the opening five minutes with a neat side-footed finish past Simon Mignolet.

Shay Given (Aston Villa 2-0 Wigan) Saturday’s clean sheet was Given’s third in a Villa jersey. The Donegal stopper had to be alert as Wigan pressed in search of a second-half lifeline, making a fine double save from Shaun Moloney and Franco Di Santo before denying Victor Moses at the death.

Npower Championship

Stephen Henderson (Leeds 1-0 Portsmouth) Henderson, 23, made his league debut for Pompey on Saturday, replacing Jamie Ashdown in goal for the trip to Elland Road. It was to be a day of mixed emotions for the Dubliner, however, as Danny Pugh’s first-half header ensured that the hosts took all three points.

League One

Eddie Nolan (Stevenage 1-2 Scunthorpe) The defender fired Scunthorpe into the lead in first-half injury time with a long-range thunderbolt which flew past Stevenage keeper Chris Day.

Scottish Premier League

Jon Daly (Dundee United 1-3 Motherwell) At 3-0 down, Daly’s conversion of Keith Watson’s rebound in the 78th minute was little more than a consolation goal for United.

Cillian Sheridan (Kilmarnock 1-2 St Johnstone) Once again, Sheridan was the Saints’ golden boy, linking neatly with strike-partner Francisco Sandaza before rounding Cammy Bell for the 74th-minute winner.
