Footballer of the Year set to miss opening months of Kerry's 2015 season

James O’Donoghue is set to undergo shoulder surgery.

JAMES O’DONOGHUE IS going to be sidelined for up to six months as he prepares to go under the knife for shoulder surgery this week.

Radio Kerry reports today that ‘The 2014 GAA-GPA Footballer of the Year’ will face a recovery period of up to six months following the operation, which would then rule him out until May.

The 24 year-old is thus set to miss Kerry’s 2015 Allianz football league campaign. He battled a shoulder injury earlier this year when he missed the Munster championship opener against Clare.

In the wake of that game, O’Donoghue returned to the Kerry starting line-up and he produced a series of brilliant attacking displays. He chalked up 4-24 in all including 0-10 against Cork, 1-5 against Galway, 1-3 when drawing with Mayo and 2-6 when defeating Mayo.

O’Donoghue played in a different role against Donegal as he withdrew out the field but still helped Kerry claim Sam Maguire despite being held scoreless.

Last month he claimed the ‘Footballer of the Year’ award and also won his second successive Allstar award.

Kerry will also be without Colm Cooper in the opening months of next year as he continues to recover from the torn cruciate ligament that he suffered in last February’s AIB All-Ireland senior club football semi-final against Castlebar Mitchels.

Manager Éamonn Fitzmaurice told Radio Kerry last night that it is set to be next March before Cooper comes back to action for the Kingdom.
