JOHNNY BUCKLEY HAS been nominated to be the Kerry senior football captain for the 2017 season.

The decision was made by Dr Crokes – who were crowned All-Ireland club champions in March – with the Killarney club having triumphed in the Kerry senior final last October.

Kerry are one of the last remaining counties, along with Kilkenny, whereby the county champions have the honour of nominating the captain of the senior inter-county team.

27-year-old Buckley made his senior debut for Kerry in 2012, in the league against Laois and in the championship against Cork.

Since then he has established himself in the Kingdom side and started at wing-forward in the 2014 All-Ireland final victory over Donegal.

Buckley was sidelined through injury last season but recovered to captain Dr Crokes to honours in Kerry, Munster and the coveted All-Ireland title on St Patrick’s Day with a success over Derry’s Slaughtneil.

Fionn Fitzgerald, who was captain for Kerry’s league final win over Dublin, has been nominated as vice-captain.

Buckley hasn’t played for Kerry yet in 2017 after focusing on the Dr Crokes campaign and not featuring since for Éamonn Fitzmaurice’s squad.

Kerry open the defence of their Munster championship crown on 10/11 June with a semi-final tie against Clare or Limerick.
