Reading boss Brian McDermott full of praise for Irish teenager after impressive cameo

17-year-old Josh Barrett was a second-half substitute in Reading’s 2-1 loss against Preston.

BRIAN MCDERMOTT DESCRIBED Ireland U17 international Josh Barrett as a “shining light” after his second half performance against Preston on Saturday.

Barrett came on as a second half substitute for the Royals, and made quite the impression on the Reading manager, in only his second game for the club.

“Josh made a difference after coming on at half-time, the shape was different, and he did a really good job. He was brave, got on the ball, created stuff. He made things happen,” McDermott told the club website.

He’s 17 years of age, but he acquitted himself well – he’s going to be a good talent. He’s been training with us and he wants to work hard. Today, he was a shining light.

Although born in England, the attacking midfielder has strong Irish roots with his parents from Dublin and Tipperary, while Barrett has also played GAA with Hampshire.

The 17-year-old made his Reading debut at the start of March against Huddersfield and has been on the bench for several games since then.

“When you come on you want have to have a couple of touches, put in a few good passes and keep the ball. After that it just comes naturally as you get into the game,” he said.

“The lads are great they help me a lot as I’m young and they always keep me on my toes. The gaffer has given me the chance, which is massive for me because that’s where every young aspiring footballer wants to be. I know I need to work hard over the off season and get back raring to go,” Barrett continued.

Saturday’s defeat at the hands of Preston increases the pressure on McDermott with the Royals now having lost five out of their last six games.

McDermott has been sacked by the Berkshire club once before, during his first stint in charge in 2013.
