As It Happened: Kerry v Roscommon, All-Ireland MFC quarter-final

Mayo booked their place in the semi-finals of the All-Ireland minor football championship yesterday. Would it be Connacht champions Roscommon or the Mickey Ned O’Sullivan coached Kerry who would join them in the last four? Here’s how it unfolded.

It was another extremely busy Gaelic Football schedule in Croke Park today and first up was the All-Ireland minor football quarter-final as Connacht champions Roscommon take on Kerry.

We were live at headquarters to record all the action.

Kerry 0-1 Roscommon 0-0: 3 mins – Huge early drama. Kerry move into an early lead courtesy of a Jack Savage free but Roscommon come close to a goal twice. Firstly Enda Smith’s shot is brilliantly blocked on the line by Ronan Murphy and then a close-range effort by Michael Gunning smacks against the bar.

Kerry 0-2 Roscommon 0-1: 5 mins – He was hugely impressive in their Munster final defeat against Tipperary and Kerry’s Niall Sheehy has shown up well early on again here. Diarmuid Murtagh won a penalty after cutting in from the left wing before being fouled. He took the kick himself but his low shot was blocked by the legs of Kerry net minder Gavin Curran. Roscommon could rue these early misses.

HALF-TIME: Kerry 1-5 Roscommon 0-5: A superb conclusion to the half for Kerry as they register the first goal of the match. David Foran seizes the ball when it comes down off the upright, feeds wing-back Brian Crowley who is up in support and he unleashes a fierce low drive to the net. Kerry ahead by three points at the break then, we’ll be back shortly with the second-half action.

Kerry 1-5 Roscommon 0-8: 37 mins – Full-forward Kevin Finn fires over a lovely point for Roscommon to tie the match. They’ve started the second-half brightly and corrected the poor shooting that marred some of their first-half play.

Great goal chance for Kerry after a flowing team move cuts open the Roscommon defence but Conor Keane’s powerful shot is brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Shane Mannion.

Kerry 1-6 Roscommon 0-8: 44 mins – Kerry edge into a slender one-point advantage when Niall Sheehy pops over a point after good work by Conor Keane.

Roscommon substitute Brian Fannon is on for Niall McInerney in their defence.
