KILMARNOCK’S SCOTTISH PREMIER League home game with Hibernian was abandoned on Sunday after a fan fell ill at Rugby Park and subsequently died in hospital.
Referee Kevin Clancy stopped play early in the second half, with the score 1-1, and the players filed down the tunnel.
An ambulance arrived to take the fan away 10 minutes later, after which Kilmarnock confirmed the match had been abandoned due to “an off-pitch incident”.
A police spokesman told Sky Sports News that a male supporter aged between 50 and 60 had been taken to hospital after suffering a suspected heart attack.
“A supporter was taken ill in the East Stand, possibly a Kilmarnock fan,” said Inspector Sean Mangan.
“Ambulance staff and club doctors have been assisting with that male. He has now gone off to the hospital in the ambulance.”
“It is looking like a possible suspected heart attack, but of course I am not a medical professional to absolutely tell you that is the case.
“But it is certainly serious enough that the club, in conjunction with the police and the SPL fourth official, have decided out of respect for the male and possibly his family that the match would be abandoned.”
The man was brought to Crosshouse Hospital, and Scottish Police later confirmed he had died.
