It's official: now nobody can say they have scored more La Liga goals than Lionel Messi

By the time he retires, Messi will have probably doubled the record.

BARCELONA ARE HAMMERING Sevilla in the La Liga tonight but something of great significance has happened during the rout. Lionel Messi has scored a hat-trick but the second of his goals has made him the highest all-time goalscorer in the league.

It was by no means his prettiest goal (actually, it was downright ugly) but it was his 252nd time finding the net in La Liga.

Given how young Messi still is, he is going to absolutely obliterate the previous record that was held by Athletic Bilbao great Telmo Zarra.
