Result: Dublin 2-15 Wexford 1-14

Welcome to a relatively empty Croke Park for the Leinster minor hurling final. The teams are out on the pitch warming up and we’ll be underway in less than 10 minutes.

Dublin are the hot favourites for this one as they overcame Kilkenny last day out and look to retain their crown. Wexford meanwhile haven’t won this title for 27 years. Indeed since that 1985 victory, they’ve lost nine finals in a row.

Teams line out as follows as we get underway

Dublin: C Mac Gabhann; S Barrett, C O’Callaghan, E Lowndes; E O’Donnell, R Murphy, S Mc Clelland; C Costello, C Cronin; C Mc Hugh, S Treacy, C Conway; O O’Rourke, C Boland, P Winters.
Wexford: O. O’Leary; S Doyle, S Murphy, E Conroy; L Ryan, A Kenny, A Roche; C Heffernan C Devitt; K Foley, S Kenny, J O’Connor; J Broaders, C McDonald, T French.

3 minutes, Dublin 0-0 Wexford 0-1: Slow start but Conor McDonald breaks the scoring duck coming deep to collect and pointing over the shoulder.

8 minutes, Dublin 0-3 Wexford 0-2: Wexford defence has started well although McHugh gets Dublin on the board but it’s immediately cancelled out by a French free. Back come Dublin again, they might have goaled but Costello shoots just over the bar. And there’s the lead for Dublin, McHugh with his second.

11 minutes, Dublin 0-3 Wexford 0-3: McDonald with a free and this one is a beautiful strike from right under the Hogan Stand into the Canal End goal. As an aside, little wind here, a little cool but not bad conditions.

16 minutes, Dublin 0-3 Wexford 1-4: Game still finding its way a little but Jack O’Connor finds his way there, good point from distance. Better to come, 21-yard free for the underdogs, Conor McDonald steps up to take it and blasts home. Should have been stopped on the line mind you, as it wasn’t the cleanest of strikes.

18 minutes, Dublin 1-4 Wexford 1-4: Back come Dublin, first with a point and then a terrible goal for Wexford to concede. Sean Treacy gets space, breaks down the middle, mishits a shot but it bobbles into the corner of the net. Mistaken-riddled couple of  minutes there and we are back level.

24 minutes, Dublin 1-4 Wexford 1-6: Conor McDonald is having a really good game. He won his own ball there, held off two defenders and put Wexford back in front. There’s been some poor shooting on both sides but not from him. Andrew Kenny follows it up with a free.

27 minutes, Dublin 1-6 Wexford 1-6:  Paul Winters keeps Dublin in touch from a dead ball.  But his side are dropping a lot of high ball into the full-forward line and not getting a whole lot of change. They need to vary it. Different type of build up there and Oisin O’Rourke pops up to point.

29 minutes, Dublin 1-7 Wexford 1-6: We talk about Dublin’s long-ball style and its use because they are largely bypassing the half-forward line. They don’t need to as Conor McHugh shows there as he wins the puck-out and drops a shot over.

Half-time, Dublin 1-8 Wexford 1-8: One of the scores of the game from one of the players of the game there, as Conor McDonald finds a couple of feet of space and spears over a point from a tight angle going away from goal. That’s followed with one from Jack O’Connor who has looked dangerous too. Meanwhile Colm Cronin finishes the scoring for the half and that’s about right. Nothing in it. Wexford have looked to surge away a couple of times but just weren’t able. We’ll find out if they can after the break, although they’ll be happy with this so far. All to play for.

Back underway here for the second half.

34 minutes, Dublin 1-9 Wexford 1-8: Better from Dublin. They clock up an early wide but Paul Winters has them ahead and they are putting on plenty of pressure across the opening second-half exchanges. And that’s at both ends of the field as they clear out the first handful of Wexford attacks.

36 minutes, Dublin 1-9 Wexford 1-9: Just as we say it Wexford are back level and Kevin Ryan replaces Jordan Broaders who has seen little of the ball. He’s initially gone into a two-man full-forward line with Conor McDonald.

39 minutes, Dublin 1-10 Wexford 1-10: Confident 65 from Colm Heffernan there. But goalkeeper Oliver O’Leary is called for charging on the way out from goal at the other end. 21-yard free for Dublin but  Sean McClelland has a low effort turned around the post – a big save in a game that’s been close throughout – although Paul Winters does send the resulting 65 over.

47 minutes, Dublin 2-12 Wexford 1-11: Dublin looking to turn the screw as Cian Boland puts them in front but Andrew Kenny is having none of it. He has been dominant at six and he cuts out a chance there, his long ball results in a free and that’s easy for Tony French who continues to drift deep in open play. But Kenny can do nothing about that as a long ball in is taken advantage of by Paul Winters and he goals. A huge moment.  Dublin add another point too. Suddenly that’s a healthy looking lead in a game of this nature.

50 minutes, Dublin 2-11 Wexford 1-11: Wexford clinging on and a needless late hit gives Tony French an easy chance to add to his tally. They need to follow that up with the next couple now as we creep into the last 10 minutes. James Cash on for Tony French for Wexford. Chris Bennett on for Sean Treacy for Dublin.

54 minutes, Dublin 2-13 Wexford 1-12: Bennett gets into the game and wins a free which Winters converts. 11 wides from Dublin though, they should be out of sight, although they very nearly are as time ticks away.

57 mins: Dublin 2-13 Wexford 1-13: Conor McDonald has been taken out of it in the second half but he does at least get to tap over an easy free there. Four to go and they know there’s only one way back into this. Time to go for goal. Sean Kenny has a shot from 21 and it’s deflected inches wide. And a scramble from the 65 and it’s cleared off the line.

60 mins: Dublin 2-13 Wexford 1-14: Andrew Kenny with a free here from 50 and he goes for the point. Now Wexford will look to go for the win. Two minutes of additional time.

Full-time, Dublin 2-15 Wexford 1-14: Wexford don’t get so much as a chance though as a heavy foul sees Conor McHugh stay down as the seconds tick away and Winters taps over the free. Boland completes the scoring with a breakaway point. Not a great game but Dublin just about deserved it. Their shooting was poor but they still created enough to get by and that second goal was always going to be a massive blow for Wexford in a game that close.
